oohhh. THIS! On so many levels…
How many here have been on the receiving end of unwanted aggression?
From the guy (usually an older, angry white dude) standing on the street corner screaming at people about how we’re all going hell, all the while citing scripture…
Or the person who yells and screams about a mistake we’ve made…
Or those who assault others in word and/or deed…
From honking horns on the road to actual physical abuse it’s easy to find examples of people, systems and organizations forcing themselves on others.
As much as these assaults are repugnant, and as emotions rise, having the self-awareness and restraint to resist joining the fray serves a greater purpose… Living out LOVE.
Oh that I could say I have it all figured out!
Whether in word or deed, all I can do is my best and keep moving forward.
I’ve been trying to live life with an open hand. What I mean is, I’m consciously trying to allow people to come to their own conclusions about life and love.
I don’t want to hold on to anything or anyone so tight I suffocate them in my grasp. I need room to breathe and so do they.
Letting go can be hard and yet opening myself up to the possibility I may not have the best answer for someone else, allowing them the freedom to make their own way is priceless!
If we’re honest with ourselves we have a picture in our minds about how life “should” be. We want that possibility to be real for those around us, sometimes to the point of driving them away because of our lack of compassion, empathy and understanding.
On this level true LOVE is letting go. Let people live their lives and figure it out.
For those who grew up in the church you may recall Paul, in a letter to the Philippians, telling the church to…” work out your own salvation…”
Our relationship with God and with ourselves is something we must work out for ourselves.
I can share what I believe, and you are free to reject and ignore it if you want. You can share what you believe and likewise I am free to reject and ignore it. That’s the beauty of diversity. By sharing ourselves we can both be better people when we seek to listen and understand.
It takes time and effort. There’s no escaping the work for the things we want…
