Attributes of LOVE
Maybe it’s me and my understanding of LOVE. It just doesn’t feel right for me to call attention to myself in the way strutting implies.
Some people’s personalities may be better suited to showmanship and demonstrative expression than mine and that’s okay. It’s part of existing in a diverse world.
The case can be made that self-promotion has its place. I’m not sure that’s the same thing…
Where LOVE is concerned and how I express LOVE in the world doesn’t require the focus to be on me.
Funny story…
I attended a summer camp in Alton Bay, New Hampshire as a teen where a counselor asked me to do a solo skit… I was petrified!
They wanted me to rush to the stage and shout “Attention! Attention! Attention! Everyone give me your Attention!”
Once everyone was looking and conversation subsided… “Thanks everyone – I just love Attention”
It was a mixed response…LOL
As part of the LGBTQ+ Community I’ve had to think on this one a bit.
All things considered, battling for equal rights under the law, I believe our visibility in the communities we live in is critical to gaining acceptance and tolerance.
Education is a factor too and it all takes time.
Can I show up in the world today and not strut or be arrogant and still advocate for my community? I believe I can – even at a PRIDE event where everyone’s authenticity is on display.
PRIDE events represent a celebration of authenticity and community. It’s a time to share our identities with the world and be there for each other so LGBTQ+ people know we are not alone.
Some who attend PRIDE events are more flamboyant and demonstrative in their expression to be sure and that’s okay. Attending a concert or sporting event elicits plenty of enthusiastic excitement regardless of identity. I think about cheese heads and barking dogs to name a couple…
LOVE and expressing LOVE to those around me is less about me and more about others…
